ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors and skylights reduce energy bills by about 7-24 percent, increase comfort, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to achieve precisely the look you’re after.

Advisory: New Year, New Numbers

As of January 4, 2010, ENERGY STAR qualified windows, doors, and skylights will meet new performance levels PDF (173KB). It will still be easy to find high-efficiency products: just look for the ENERGY STAR label.

In the next few months, you will see two new labels to help you choose windows, doors, or skylights for your home:

NEW STANDARDS ARE COMING

Starting October 1, 2009, you might see the label shown on the right, in red or in black, in combination with ENERGY STAR product labels. This label identifies high-efficiency products that currently qualify for the ENERGY STAR but will not meet the more stringent requirements that go into full effect April 1, 2010.

Get up to $1500 in Federal Tax Credits

The other new label helps you find products that are eligible for the federal tax credit of up to $1,500. The label to the left, already visible in stores today, tells you the product qualifies for ENERGY STAR and is also eligible for the tax credit.

Energy Trust Window IncentivesIncentives are only available for work performed by a licensed contractor such as one of those listed on this site.

Windows must be installed with a second complete energy-saving improvement. One of the following additional improvements qualify as the second needed improvement: attic/ceiling insulation, wall insulation, floor insulation, gas furnace, boiler, heat pump, tankless water heater, duct sealing or air sealing. Improvement must meet all program specifications and requirements to qualify as a second improvement. Duct or air sealing must meet maximum incentive amount to qualify as second improvement.

Energy Trust Incentives

Electric- and gas-heated homes: $2.25 per square foot
U-Value 0.30 or less. Windows must be installed together with a second energy-saving improvement. Both improvements must be installed within 120 days of each other; the incentive application must also be received within this time.

Second improvement must meet all program specifications and requirements to qualify.

Tax Credits

Federal energy tax credit: 30 percent of cost, up to $1,500. See rules and requirements.
